Airway Management
Course Description
The Airway Management Course is designed for healthcare providers who must be proficient in using airway devices on adults in hospital or out of hospitalThe Airway Management Course consists of 5 modules:
- Bag-Mask Ventilation and Airway Adjuncts (required)
- Laryngeal Mask Airway (Optional)
- Esophageal-Tracheal Combitube (optional)
- Endotracheal Tube (optional)
- Impedance threshold device (optional)
The Bag-Mask Ventilation and Airway Adjunct module must be taught as a foundation before any other module. All additional modules are optional, based on need and scope of practice.
These modules may be uses at the end of the BLS for Healthcare personnel Course or the ACLS Course. It may also be uses as a stand-alone airway management course.
Course Goal
The goal of these modules is to enhance students’ airway management skills in the treatment of respiratory and cardiac arrest.
Learning Objectives
Depending on the module(s) taught, upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to
- Demonstrate the following BLS skills: placement of an oropharyngeal airway (OPA) and a nasopharyngeal airway (NPA), bag-mask ventilation and cricoid pressure, head tilt-chin lift suctioning
- Verify correct advanced airway placement using multiple methods (ie, end-tidal Co2 esophageal detector device (EDD), colorimetric device, pulse oximeter, chest auscultation)
- Demonstration proper insertion of a laryngeal mask airway (LMA)
- Demonstrate proper insertion of a combitube
- Demonstrate proper insertion of an endotracheal tube (ET tube)
- Demonstrate appropriate mask and airway adjunct sizing
- Demonstrate proper use of an impedance threshold device (ITD) with bag-mask ventilations and advanced airways
- Describe the clinical situations in which the following may be used for airway management:
- Suctioning
- OPA
- NPA
- Bag-mask ventilation
- LMA
- Combitube
- ET tube
- ITD
